We now live in: The United States of America

The United States of America is a federal republic with a population of approximately 300 million people.

Since my first visit in 2000, I have found the countries and peoples of The US and Australia, to be very similar, as is their relevant size, as shown below.

As noticeable as the similarities are the differences between the two countries. For example, to see advertising for cigarettes prominently displayed in public, many years after such advertising was banned in Australia really makes it stand out.

Driving on the other side of the road, from the other side of the car to takes a little getting use to!

After over 3 years living in the U.S. I can safely say the biggest difference I found between the fine folk of the United States and Australians is that our new American neighbors take themselves and life far too seriously!

In: the State of Oregon.



The state of Oregon is located on the west coast of the United States, North of California and South of Washington State.

Oregon's features include tall, dense forests, scenic coastlines and fertile agricultural farmlands. The climate of Oregon, around the Portland/Salem area, is similar to that of Tasmania in Australia.

The city of Salem became the state capital of Oregon in 1851. The state capital was moved briefly in 1855 but returned permanently soon after. "Salem" is derived from the Hebrew word "Shalom" which means peace.

As the state capital, the main economic focus is primarily governmental, but it also serves as a hub for the farming community.

The island continent of Australia is among the driest on earth and is about the same size as the continental United States but only has a population of around 21.5 million (2009).

Victoria has a population of about 3 million and for many years was the financial capital of the country although Sydney the capital of the state adjoining the northern state border is sharing, and seems to be taking over this role.

The City of Frankston is an hours drive south east of Melbourne, the state capital.

Frankston has a population of around 115,000 and sits at the start of the Mornington Peninsula, the state's summer play ground.
